IOM assesses migration data collection in Latin America, Caribbean

03 May 2013 – An IOM report presented this week in Brussels assesses how migration data is collected in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), sub-regions and countries. The report, 'Rapid Assessment of Data Collection Structures in the Field of Migration in Latin America and the Caribbean', provides a descriptive analysis of current data collection in the region and provides specific analyses for each of its four sub-regions and countries: (1) the MERCOSUR region, which includes Chile and Venezuela; (2) the Andean region; (3) Central America, Mexico, Panama and Belize; and (4) the Caribbean.  More >>

ECHO backs IOM aid to displaced in Mali


 26 April 2013 – European Commission Humanitarian Aid Department (ECHO) Director General Claus Sorensen this week met with internally displaced Malians identified by IOM’s ECHO-funded project to track displacement in the conflict-affected West African nation. IOM Mali is also providing basic health services, psychosocial support, shelter and essential non-food relief items to the most vulnerable IDPs. ECHO has contributed EUR 1 million to IOM’s emergency response programme in Mali. IOM Director General attends 5th Global Forum of UN Alliance of Civilizations in Vienna

26 February 2013 – IOM Director General William Lacy Swing is taking part in the 5th Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations (AoC) in Vienna, which runs from Wednesday 27th to Thursday 28th February. The Forum is attended by dignitaries including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Presidents and Prime Ministers of over 35 nations, and addresses the theme: “Promoting Responsible Leadership in Diversity and Dialogue”.  More >>


Diverse, innovative approaches are needed to ensure safe migration for women and girls

04 March 2013 – "For many women and girls, migration is a way to fulfil their potential, to develop and to exercise their human rights. But being both a migrant and female also exposes them to risk – the risk of being subjected to violence,” says Ambassador William Swing, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).  “As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2013, I take pride in seeing the many and diverse initiatives IOM colleagues are working on worldwide to eradicate violence against women at every stage of the migration process."  More >>

ECHO backs IOM effort to end Haiti earthquake camps, re-house victims

08 Feb 2013 - The European Commission Humanitarian Aid Directorate (ECHO) has stepped in with a new EUR 6 million contribution to an IOM programme which supports the relocation of camp residents to safer housing options through the provision of rental subsidies. The new ECHO funding will allow IOM to extend the programme until December 2013 targeting at least 7,560 families in some 50 of the highest risk camps in terms of poor sanitation, flooding and landslides.  More >>
