Another important area of IOM’s work in the field of regulating migration is Immigration and Border Management (IBM). Based on IOM’s technical experience and expertise in this area, RO Brussels serves to facilitate exchange of ideas and proposals between countries of origin of migrants in the region and the EU at the regional level.

One of the key challenges at regional level is the response to irregular and mixed migration flows at the EU's external borders. IOM supports EU agencies and Member States in responding to this challenge by providing technical assistance from a human rights perspective in the development of training material and through joint operations, particularly in the areas of counter-trafficking, assisted voluntary return and reintegration, Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC) and other groups of vulnerable migrants, mixed migration flows and cooperation with third countries. IOM also supports our partners through data management, knowledge sharing, capacity building, networking, and interfacing with sending and transit countries.

As such, IOM participates in the Frontex Consultative Forum for Fundamental Rights. The role of the Consultative Forum is to assist the Frontex Executive Director and the Management Board in Fundamental Rights matters and to be consulted on the further development and implementation of the Fundamental Rights Strategy, Code of Conduct and common core curricula.
