In Afghanistan, the EURCAP Facility provided Post-Arrival Reception and Reintegration Assistance to 152 returnees between December 2016 and March 2017 under the Joint Way Forward on migration issues (JWF) between Afghanistan and the EU. The assistance included temporary accommodation, secondary transportation, referral services, medical assistance and needs-based assistance for vulnerable cases. This support action provided necessary bridging funds to ensure the provision of post-arrival reception assistance while another EU-funded project “Reintegration Assistance for Development in Afghanistan” (RADA), developed and implemented by IOM, was in its final negotiation phase to finalize procedures for providing a long-term related intervention in sustainable reintegration in Afghanistan.
In addition to individual support to migrants, IOM carried out two capacity-building activities:
- A training workshop for Afghan national and EU institutions to map the existing returnee reintegration structures and to identify gaps in terms of legal frameworks, capacity and resources.
- A training workshop to address the challenges related to the identification and return of Afghan rejected asylum-seekers.
