IOM’s cooperation with the EU in Africa extends across all sub-regions and regional migration dialogues of the continent, including support to the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States.

EU-IOM collaboration has recently intensified and led to the launch of the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration, in response to the outcomes of the Valletta Summit on Migration of 2015.

The EU-IOM Joint Initiative is funded by the EU Trust Fund for Africa and established in close cooperation with 26 African countries in the Sahel and Lake Chad regions, North Africa and the Horn of Africa. The EU-IOM Joint Initiative works with these partner countries to strengthen mechanisms to protect and assist migrants along migration routes, ensuring the respect of migrants’ rights and a safer and better managed migration process.

In 2018, IOM is implementing over 30 EU-funded projects across Africa targeting migrant protection and assistance, migration governance, community stabilisation, migration and development, and migration policy and research.
